In 2005, through a mutual friend, Steve Steward, I had the good fortune to meet Misty Locke, the co-founder of a Fort Worth, TX-based search agency, Range Online Media (now iProspect). That serendipitous meeting would prove to be a life-changing moment for me, as I immediately found myself intrigued by and drawn to the world of digital marketing. Misty is one of the most professional, inspiring leaders I have ever met. I’m grateful that she took a flier on me, as I knew next to nothing about digital marketing at the time.
When I started at Range, I was immediately placed on the SEO team under one of the best and most well-known SEO’s in the business – Todd Friesen.
Todd introduced me to the concept of building and optimizing websites, focusing specifically on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and User Experience (UX). He also introduced me to the who’s who of SEO – people such as Danny Sullivan, Matt Cutts, Greg Boser, Vanessa Fox, Todd Malicoat, Rand Fishkin, Stephan Spencer, Marshall Simmonds, Brett Tabke, Rae Dolan, and many more. I feel extremely blessed to have been given introductions to the greatest SEO minds at a time when SEO was still in its infancy and when those same minds would often brag about their SEO tactics at conferences. 🕵️
After just under 5 years at Range, working with some of the biggest retail and travel brands out there, I decided to become a consultant, so I could focus on brands who were diving into the rapidly-emerging field of Content Marketing.
During this time, I had the privilege of working on two unique projects. The first was with Viator VP of Product Scott McNeely on Viator’s ‘Things To Do’ travel blog network, where we built roughly 180 blogs focused specifically on popular global travel destinations. Scott is natural leader, as well as a problem-solver and critical thinker. His knowledge of the travel and tourism industry is second to none, and I feel privileged to have worked with him for 9 years.
The second project had me working directly with Mike Robinson, the CEO & President of Eastwood Guitars. Music is one of my main passions in life, and I absolutely love the world of guitars. Working with Mike to rebuild and scale his primary content avenue, MyRareGuitars.com, was a dream come true. Mike is the real deal – a visionary with a focus on finding gaps in the marketplace, building targeted audiences, and delivering world-class customer service.
In 2010, another amazing opportunity revealed itself when a longtime friend and former colleague at Range Online Media – George Popstefanov – decided to start a new agency. It was a no-brainer to join him for what would be a truly excellent adventure.
As a colleague, George had distinguished himself from his peers by having a deep understanding of the whole marketing ecosystem as well as the underlying technologies and systems that powered digital marketing. As a boss and mentor, George taught me so much about people, business, and marketing. I don’t even want to imagine where I’d be today if I hadn’t met him all those years ago.
During my eight years at PMG, the company would grow to 150+ employees representing 30+ brands, spin off a leading software company-turned-agency (Koddi), win dozens of industry awards (#61 on the Inc. 500, iMedia’s Agency of the Year, seven Cannes Lions Awards, Ad Age’s Best Places to Work, etc…), and ultimately become recognized as a top tier digital advertising agency. It was the experience of a lifetime.
In June 2018, I left PMG in search of a new opportunity. I really wasn’t sure where I’d land, but I knew that I wanted to get back into the execution side of things, particularly for small to mid-size brands and companies that have specific challenges and projects related to customer experience and online growth.
In July 2018, I joined up with two longtime friends – Steve Costello and Jackie Jacobson – to start a new digital agency: Base3Group. Steve has 20 years on the brand side, managing marketing and ecomm for companies like Tropicana, Valvoline Motorsports, RadioShack, and PepsiCo. Jackie has 10 years in industrial design and product development. In our first several months of existence, Base3Group have found our niche in supporting brands and companies who are looking for incremental growth while also improving their online presence and user experience.
